“In thinking of 2010 and beyond, I hope to have a large garden filled with vegetables. I’m becoming more aware of animal cruelty, and one way to help make a change is to eat vegetarian as much as possible. My vision for the coming decade is for people to eat as conscientiously as possible. This piece is made up of loosely cut paper shapes which were turned into a limited edition screen print.”

“Improved vision, and new perspectives. ‘Cathartes Aura’ is the latin name for the Turkey vulture, and it translates literally to ‘Golden Purifier.’ Quite an adequate and graceful name for what I perceive as a magnificent, and peaceful bird with a grim reputation.”
—Karen Ingram

10.22.09 Robogurumi Workshops!

On October 17th and 19th, Ossu! Shugeibu led workshops in which participants each made a "robogurumi" - a handcrafted robotic toy. The first workshop was open to the public, and the second one was for a class of Parsons students who were studying toy design.
After making their quirky, funny, and adorable robogurumis, everyone took to the streets to "walk" their new pets!
We often host artist-led workshops in conjunction with our shows - so if you don't want to miss out on the next one, join our mailing list now!
10.21.09 “Before and After” is now open!

Thanks to coverage from BUST magazine (our media sponsor), the local Japanese press, and many art and design blogs, the October 14th opening of "Before and After" by Ossu! Among our visitors were special guests Shigeru Ichida, the interior design guru, and Steven Guarnaccia of Parsons.
The club “president,” Shoichi Ishizawa, demonstrated some of his unusual creations, and even got everyone involved with a group craft project.
It was a crazy-fun evening!

![]()
You have one more week to purchase stunning artwork from Forget Me-Not: embroidered love from the new craft movement, our recent show that received acclaim from The Village Voice, Poppytalk, Design Milk, and Martha Stewart's craft blog, among many others.
Though the show closed earlier this month, the hand-embroidered artwork is available through the end of the month via the gallery hanahou online shop. Many of the one-of-a-kind pieces are surprisingly affordable. Additionally, artist Shannon Rankin has reduced the prices of her beautiful, geographically-inspired artwork.

The gallery was packed chock full last Friday for the opening of Forget Me-Not, our group show of embroidered love! Basking in the warmth of the marvelously detailed, hand-stitched artwork was a large crowd of gallery goers, embroidery fans, and the artists responsible for it all.

12.17.08 Making Plushes with the Masters
In the weeks since its opening, Luv-able + Hug-able has not only brought original gifts to many gallery visitors, but it has also brought the power of plush-making to participants in TWO artist-led workshops!
On December 5th, Shoichi Ishizawa (aka Bucho) and Makiko Miyata from Ossu! Syugeibu led a lunchtime crowd in making improvised large-mouthed toys out of a pair of socks. Anyone who joins an Ossu! Syugeibu workshop automatically becomes a member of the Ossu! Syugeibu "club," so we were thrilled to be a part of this growing movement of liberated crafting.
Then, plush artist Jenny Harada plush led an eager group in making adorable "Elf Chum" ornaments on December 13th. Jenny supplied the pattern and funky materials, and the participants stitched up their own toothy elves to take home.
We plan to host more workshops in conjunction with gallery shows in the future, so sign up on our mailing list to stay informed!
12.09.08 Luv-able + Hug-able NOW OPEN!

Syugeibu (all the way from Japan!). Photos from the opening are now up on our Flickr, and you can also view and purchase all of the pieces from the show at our online shop. 10.27.08 Plush You! opening at Schmancy
We had the pleasure to attend the wonderfully plush-tastic opening of the annual Plush You! show at Schmancy earlier this month. Kristen Rask, the proprietress of Schmancy, has curated a wonderful array of plush excitement once again. This year, gallery hanahou was thrilled to add to the roster by introducing 6 plush artists from Japan: Ayumi Sato/Junie Moon, The Ossu! Syugeibu, rei*komurasaki, IMAI SAYAKA, SPOOKS by Kobayashi Mayu, Yuko Hara and Yuriko Sera.
The show is open now through November 13 at Schmancy, Nancy and Fancy in Seattle. If you can't make it out to the show in person, all the plush will also be made available for viewing and purchase at the Schmancy online store.

10.24.08 SPREAD THE LEAD open and online!
Who knew pencils could be so much fun?
There was never a dull moment during last Thursday's opening of "Spread the Lead" at New York's gallery hanahou, where a buzzing crowd enjoyed 32 artists' take on graphite and tried to imagine a world without color. In addition to the artwork, the pencils used to create the pieces were also on display, along with books filled with the artists' thoughts on this compelling show concept.
Many participating artists made an appearance at the opening: Robbie Guertin, Sara Singh, Kenzo Minami, Kirsten Ulve, Olimpia Zagnoli, Yuri Birdfish, Felix-Gabriel Smith, Kana Togashi, and Erotic Dragon (who came all the way from Tokyo!)
If you missed the opening, stop by gallery hanahou through November 20 to see "Spread the Lead" for yourself. All of the pieces from the show are also now available for viewing and purchase here.
10.03.08 Upcoming: SPREAD THE LEAD
What if the history of art began and ended with graphite, and your local art supply store was little more than a pencil outlet? For our upcoming group show "SPREAD THE LEAD," gallery hanahou has challenged artists from all backgrounds and mediums to drop their brushes and computer mice and see what they can do with only a 2B pencil and a piece of paper. Just as compelling as the results on the gallery walls will be the visitors' reactions to so many artistic viewpoints rendered in shades of gray. The pencils the artists use to create their work will be included with sale of the artwork.
Incredible drawings have been pouring in this week: pencil artwork from digital maestro Kenzo Minami, fashion artist Sara Singh, and others who are finding expression for their creativity in new and varied ways through this humble medium. We are thrilled to present this rare glimpse of works that at once demonstrates the artists' skilled draftsmanship and reveals their playful, experimental sides.
Please join us and several of the artists for the opening reception on October 16. RSVP here to attend.
09.10.08 Head Games Dress Candy now online!
The September 3rd opening of Head Games Dress Candy, the collaborative exhibit of sculpture and jewelry by Sara Singh and Arlene Guerra, was a smashing Fashion Week kickoff event!
Crowds flocked to gallery hanahou to see the carved silhouettes of Singh - ranging from men and women to handguns and chihuahuas - and the new jewelry collection by Guerra, which incorporates candy-colored plastic with surprise elements such as big plastic eyes. Gift bags and a custom passion fruit cocktail added to the girl-chic party atmosphere of the show.
Head Games Dress Candy runs through October 7 at gallery hanahou. The sculptures and jewelry in the exhibit are also now available for purchase online here!
08.21.08 Head Games Dress Candy in September!
Fashion illustrator Sara Singh and jewelry designer and creator of P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing) Arlene Guerra are ushering in New York Fashion Week this September with a joint exhibit of sculpture and jewelry that plays with concepts of innocence and character.
With silhouettes of male and female busts carved from plywood, Singh comments on the vanity and secrecy of the surfaces we present to each other. Complementing Singh's organic sculptures is Guerra's new collection of exaggerated, candy-colored jewelry, which blurs the line between the dress-up games of children and the adult dress-up game called fashion.
Please join the artists for the opening reception, sponsored by Svedka Vodka and Lure, on Wednesday, September 3, 6-9 pm.
(RSVP here to attend.)
08.20.08
Thanks to enthusiastic press from AM New York and New York Family magazine, families, day care groups, and even adults unaccompanied by kids have been flocking to gallery hanahou this summer to bask in the colorful environment created by Chris Long.
"This is Fun" runs through August 29th, so it's not too late to come join the fun!
07.17.08 FUN has arrived at gallery hanahou!!
As of last Thursday's opening of This is Fun, gallery hanahou is brimming with colorful energy and larger-than-life murals of kids immersed in game and mischief - all the handiwork of London artist Chris Long!
On Thursday morning a workshop for kids was held by the artist himself - guided by Chris's enthusiasm and talent, local children joined in with crayons in hand and drew away to their heart's content. Their charming artwork is now displayed alongside Chris's own works, for an exhibit that truly celebrates childhood and creativity.
You can see some photos of the exhibition here, but the vibrancy of Chris's hand-painted illustrations is best experienced firsthand, so we invite you to stop by the gallery this summer before August 29th. Summertime is FUN-time, so come see what all the noise is about!
For those who can't make it to the gallery in person, all of Chris's artwork from the show is now also available for viewing and purchase here at the gallery website.

This is Fun will also feature a painted mural by the artist and a display of drawings by local kids. The gallery will be furnished with Bam-Bam Table & Chairs sets courtesy of Hic-cup Children’s Furniture by Christopher Ross.
Grownup visitors will smile to see something familiar and truthful in Chris’s images of childhood, and young visitors will be encouraged to explore their own creativity with a free coloring book of illustrations by Chris. Please RSVP to attend the opening with the artist on July 10.
For those who can't make it to the show in New York, all of Chris Long's artwork in the show will be available for viewing and purchase via our online shop starting July 16.

“100 Girls on Cheap Paper” Has Opened!
We’re happy to say that the opening reception for Tina Berning’s solo show “100 Girls on Cheap Paper” last week was a great success! Many of Tina’s fans and people from the New York art scene turned out, and of course, the presence of Tina herself made it a very special event.
The exhibit, which is running through May 11, is spare and beautiful - Tina displayed framed pieces from her first "100 Girls" show in Berlin on one wall, and she covered the opposite wall with gorgeous new illustrations on various sizes of delicate, yellowed paper.
Many pieces sold at the opening, but some are still available. As always, for those who cannot make it to the gallery in New York, Tina’s work can also be purchased here.

What's not to like about guitar-playing bears, vibrating clowns, and zombie children? Nothing, according to the steady crowds that thronged to the opening of Kirsten Ulve’s solo show “Pictures You Will Like!” on Friday. The show, which features candy-colored limited-edition prints by Kirsten, certainly lives up to its name!
As an added bonus, the artist herself was in attendance at the opening, and Pop Rocks, candy cigarettes, and funky tunes all contributed to the exquisitely off-beat atmosphere of the show.
“Pictures You Will Like” runs through March 16th. But if you can’t make it to New York for the show, Kirsten’s prints are also available online here!

02.12.07
Did you catch the lovely feature of Kirsten's work in Time Out last month?
A whole lot more of Kirsten Ulve's brilliant work
will be on view here at hanahou starting next week,
when her solo exhibit "Pictures You Will Like!" opens. We look forward to seeing you at the opening!
